Description

Teach main idea and details while having fun! EASILY transform your classroom into a movie theater theme that focuses on the skill of identifying the main idea and details of videos, books, and passages! Your students will take their seats in your pretend movie theater and enjoy two short and wordless movies during the whole-group lessons. Detailed lesson plans are included for the teacher! Scaffolding is provided through teacher modeling, discussion, and partner work. This engaging main idea pack includes a comprehension craft called a main idea movie popcorn tool. Your students will use the main idea reading tool to help guide them as they identify and discuss the main idea and details. The main idea craftivity can be used with ANY book, passage, or video for a hands-on and engaging reading tool! Pass out popcorn boxes and allow the students to take home their main idea reading tool! They will LOVE it! I have also included my own lesson plans of how I organized our Main Idea Movie Day theme, including suggestions, tips, and additional ideas for your students and classroom.

You can also extend the learning into your small reading groups using the differentiated graphic organizers and differentiated main idea reading passages! Students can use their movie popcorn box as a visual tool during and after they read and complete the graphic organizers! This can be used with any guided reading books you already use, too.

(You will need access to YouTube in order to access the wordless movies. Links to the wordless movies are provided in the pack. The two movies I used for my lessons are Ormie and Pip, although the pack will certainly work with others, too.)

Who is Main Idea Movie Day designed for?
Identifying the main idea and the details is an important comprehension skill that all readers need to develop as they read to understand. I created this pack for first-grade and second-grade students. The three differentiated reading passages allow you to choose which reading passage works best for your grade level or group of students. If your students find the passages too hard or too easy, keep in mind that you can use any passage or guided reading book with these activities. The popcorn reading tool, graphic organizers, and bookmarks are appropriate for all levels of readers in first and second grade. Third-grade readers will find Main Idea Movie Day fun, too! Kindergarten classrooms can use it, as well! Just have your students color pictures onto the graphic organizer and select a guided reading book that works best for them. You can even use it all solely in a whole-group setting with read-aloud books.

Can I see what some of the pages look like?
Of course! Simply click on the Preview File and scroll through to get a feel for this mini-pack. You can preview one of the differentiated passages so that you can get a feel for whether or not the text complexity of the three versions will work for your group or groups of students. There are two nonfiction passages included and one fiction passage.
