Sight Word Reading Cards: Read Find Eliminate

Description

This sight word resource contains 100 sight word reading cards for sight word identification and practice. These sight word cards can be used during small group reading, reteaching and intervention times, placed within a literacy or word work center or used for additional sight word and reading practice with students. Students will love reading the sentences and being “reading detectives” as they hunt for hidden sight words within the pictures of each card. This is designed to be an engaging literacy activity that integrates reading practice and fun! The sight words correlate with the first 100 Fry words.

How do you use the sight word reading cards?
1) The student will read the sentence.
2) Six words have been hidden within the picture on each card. The student will use a magnifying glass (optional) to find and circle the underlined sight word that has been hidden five times within the picture.
3) The student will eliminate, or cross off, the hidden sight word that is NOT the same as the underlined word.

How does this resource benefit my students?
This activity allows students to practice visual discrimination skills, and receive practice in identifying sight words and reading sight words fluently.

By finding and crossing off the sight word that is different from the underlined word, students are utilizing visual discrimination skills. Visual discrimination is the ability to see differences and similarities between objects and forms. Students who have difficulty with visual discrimination may have a hard time seeing the differences between similar letters and numbers, such as the differences between the word won’t and the word want. Finding the sight word that differs from the underlined word on each card can help students practice paying attention to details, which will help them to correctly recognize letters, numbers, and words that have only a small difference between them. For students who struggle to identify sight words within context, this could be a critical skill that will make a positive difference in their sight word progress.
