Inference Reading Passages

Description

10 reading passages with a focus on making inferences are included. These passages come in THREE three tiers (levels) of complexity. The varied levels of reading passages make differentiating small group instruction and intervention effortless. Your whole class can read the same story, but at a reading level that he or she can access! We know differentiated instruction is a key to student success – but if often takes time and extra planning. This pack is designed to help you plan for your reading groups effectively and efficiently.

Each of the 10 stories contains three tiers (levels) of complexity:

Level 1: Text is short and manageable. Level 1 passages contain a lot of picture support to help students infer. Comprehension questions require written responses that are short and to the point – they can be answered in one complete sentence. The students underline the clues within the text to support their inference.

Level 2: The text is lengthier than Level 1 and there is less picture support for the passage. The comprehension section includes a one-sentence written response answer and a more complex written response. The student has to write about a clue in the text that helped him or her make an inference.

Level 3: Level 3 passages contain the most text and textual details within the passage. There is NO picture support – the student must depend entirely on the text to draw a conclusion. The comprehension section is open-ended to encourage critical thinking skills. The student must cite two text clues from the passage to support his or her inferences.

The pack contains 10 stories, inference posters, a character emotions anchor chart for scaffolding and support, and thinking stems for discussion and written response support. This pack is print-friendly with color and black and white versions of the posters.

With 10 differentiated stories, that is enough to cover two weeks of inference comprehension practice with your students using tiered complexity (if used once daily). Your students will be able to read and discuss the same storyline – yet be challenged in their learning without having to reach a frustration level. Use all three tiers or just one or two – the choice is yours!

This pack is perfect for first and second-grade readers. It would also be ideal for struggling third-graders and advanced kindergartners. Special Intervention teachers would find this useful for catering to individual student needs.
