Weekend App Attack! Word Problems

I’m back with another Weekend App Attack! I don’t know about you, but one thing my low kiddos struggle with the most in math are story problems.  It makes perfect sense – story problems require a combination of reading skills as well as abstract, critical, and logical thinking. Deficiency in just one of these areas can cause a weakness in this skill.  So, I’m always on the lookout for materials, activities, lessons – anything that will provide extra practice and understanding in story problems.

The app I’m sharing with you today is called Word Problems.  It is available on iTunes for $0.99.  I know, I know – it’s not free. But I honestly think it’s well worth the $0.99!  Actually, it’s a must for me to begin next year with! The authors of this app are Classroom Focused Software.  They are awesome!! There are so many more apps from these authors that I plan on sharing with you.  They are very big in making their apps Common Core based.

All of the problems are 10 or less – perfect for starting off the year.  AND, the best part? There is an option you can set to have the story read aloud to the students. Yay! My low kiddos can focus on the math concepts without feeling defeated in the area of reading, while my on-target and higher kids can work on all concepts at once.

The reason I love this app is because it provides students with virtual manipulatives to help solve the story problems.  It doesn’t get any better than that! That is exactly what my firsties need.  If used on the iPad, it also has a whiteboard space for students to work the problem out, if needed.  Providing an answer is easy.  Since all of the problems are 10 or less, students simply click on the answer at the bottom of the screen.

I hope you can find this app useful for your classroom! 🙂

Before I go, I have to share what I just witnessed as I walked into my bedroom. I mean really…can we say pampered?!  My little fur ball has a hard life.
