These Point and Read Diphthongs Boom Cards™ for Boom Learning™ help students decode, comprehend, and read sentences with diphthongs. (This deck focuses on au, aw, ew, oi, ou, oo, oo, oy.) The cards also promote fluency, sight word recognition, comprehension, word recognition, and phonics. Students will love practicing their decoding skills with these digital beginning reader sentences, and you will love the simplicity, direct instruction and practice, and student engagement! These task cards are self-checking through the Boom Learning™️ platform. These task cards can be used and played on any device that has access to the Internet, such as a tablet, mobile device, laptop, or computer!

How do you play and use this digital resource?

Touch the dots and read each word within the sentence. Then, click on the picture that matches the sentence. The two pictures that students have to choose from on each card have been strategically chosen to help students focus on their comprehension of the sentence. For example, in the sentence “Sit down on the couch.”, the child must read and then choose between a picture of couch or a picture of a coach. This requires the student to read, stop, and think about what was just read, as well as pay close attention to their decoding skills. The student must read and comprehend the entire sentence in order to choose the correct picture after decoding.

Who is this resource designed for?

This pack was designed for first grade students, OR, any student who is still working on reading words with diphthongs. It’s important to focus on the phonics SKILLS your students need to be reinforced and taught when it comes to phonics instruction, rather than the grade level. Therefore, many second grade and third grade teachers of struggling readers and special education teachers have used this with their students who are still working on decoding diphthongs.
