Description

These phonics word builders will quickly become your students’ new favorite phonics game! Students use the included recording sheets (or dry-erase boards, paper, or notebooks) to create as many words as possible using the letters that are available in the box. Set a time limit, or use an open-ended format to keep your students thinking and building words for as long as they can! You can print the word builders, use only the recording sheets, or display the word builder you’d like on a screen or smartboard.

This is an EDITABLE resource!

This resource is EDITABLE so that you can type any letters you want students to work with into the boxes and recording sheets! Within the zip folder, you’ll find an editable PDF for these word builders! The best part? Simply type the letters you wish into each box and the recording sheet will automatically be filled in for you!

Be ready for your students to surprise you with the amount of amazing words they create each time they play! You’ll love the rigor and additional phonics practice that students receive each time they use a word builder. They’ll love the challenge and FUN!

TWO Ways to Play for Differentiation!

You can limit the words your students build to the letters in the box, OR you can set a NEW RULE to reuse and challenge students all over again. The rule I like to introduce after they understand how to play is that students can double the letters on the slide if they want to! For example, if there is an e, t, f, and n on the word builder, students can make words like ten and net, or double the letters to make words like teen, feet, and fee! This lets you use all 50 slides all over again in a new way as your students learn more advanced phonics skills!

This resource includes:

  • 50 premade word puzzles that are available in a printable version OR display the PDF slide to the class on a screen!
  • 50 coordinating recording sheets, each in two differentiated, lined formats
  • Instructions for two different ways to play so that you can reuse them all over again!
  • Six editable printable and digital puzzles so that you can type whatever letters you’d like into the boxes!
  • Editable printable recording sheets

FINALLY…a phonics center and activity that differentiates with ease!

This phonics activity is amazing because it can reach SO many students at various skills. Whether your students are at the two-phoneme word level or skilled enough to build longer words and multisyllabic words, EVERY student is challenged and able to play successfully! When two vowels are present in the box, students can build cvc words or combine the vowels to form words with vowel teams and multisyllabic words. EVERY student can work at his or her skill level and practice important phoneme-grapheme connections.

We love to display a word builder on our screen and create as many words as we can as a whole-class! This word work and phonics activity is a great team building game, too!

Ideas for when and how to use this resource:

• phonics warm-up

• small-group game

• whole-group game

• literacy center

• phonics center

• word work center

• partner practice activity

• weekly morning routine

• end-of-day dismissal challenge

• literacy night activity station

• fast-finisher activity

My students could not get enough of this word building game! They would play together as a whole-class to beat the amount of words they made the day before. They also loved to play whenever we had a few extra minutes in our day, and at the end of the day as we were packing up and waiting for dismissal bells. I hope you LOVE this resource and find it to be engaging and effective as your students practice encoding and decoding skills!
