Weekend App Attack: QuickMark QR Code Reader – for Windows or Mac!

This weekend I’m sharing an exciting QR Code Reader that I just discovered.  QR Codes are popping up all over the place – and they are headed straight for our classrooms.  In the past, I’ve blogged about some of the ways I’ve used QR codes with my students. You can read about that by clicking HERE and HERE.  But what do you do when you don’t have a smartphone or a tablet to scan a QR Code?
Enter: QuickMark QR Code Reader!  I put this FREE program to the test and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install, use, and scan QR codes straight from my computer! No smartphone needed!
Here is what you do:
1. Download and install QuickMark onto your computer. You’ll need to choose the system that you want the program installed on. For example, if you are using Windows, choose the Windows version.  If your computer is a Mac, choose the Mac version.
Pick your version and download the reader by clicking HERE

Once you have installed the program onto your computer, open it up, along with the document that contains the QR Code you wish to scan.  For demonstration purposes, I opened up a PDF file that contains a QR code to my blog.  I also opened up the QuickMark program.  You can see that the QuickMark box popped up onto my document when I opened up the program.

I clicked the little bar-code picture at the bottom of the box (right beside the button that looks like a camera) and dragged the box over the QR code that is on my document. The box is “see-through” so that you can center the QR code in the frame of the box.

Next, I clicked the small orange circle.  When I hover over the orange circle, it says “Decode.”  Click it and you will see a new box pop up. As you can see, clicking the orange circle, or the “decode” button, caused the program to “read” or scan my QR Code!  My blog link just showed up in the box – all I have to do now, is click the link and it will take me there. 🙂  If the QR Code was simply words or numbers that I could read, it would show up here in the box.

Ta-da!  A QR Code Reader without a smartphone or tablet 🙂  If you have computers in your classroom but lack tablets, this little program will make it easy for your students to still use QR codes in the classroom.  I hope you find this program useful!

Thank you so much for joining me for another Weekend App Attack! Today, I am headed to my best friend’s for a day of lounging in the sun and relaxing by the lake.  Ahhh…Don’t you love summer?! 🙂
