Sight Word Fluency Passages for Reading Intervention

Hi everyone!  I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving.  It was so nice to relax for the day and visit with all of our family.

Do you have students who can read sight words quickly on a flashcard but then struggle to read them within the context of a story?

I do! I have about five of them.  I have been pulling my hair out trying to transfer the sight words from the flashcards into the books and text we’re reading.  They are awesome at flashcards and can read the word “was” quickly and effortlessly.  However, these same students will see the word “was” within our guided reading book or our AIMSweb assessments, and begin to tap out or sound the word out.  I believe it is a combination of putting an entire phrase together AND seeing the words in a variety of font. As strange as that may sound, I do believe this change in font makes a difference.  My flashcards currently are a nice “handprint” font.  However, our AIMSweb progress monitoring and most of the books we read have a kind of Times New Roman font to them.  For struggling students, this can easily throw them off.

I knew I needed to do something to get these little kiddos on track with sight word fluency.  I’ve been working really hard a new little packet that I’ve been using for small group intervention and instruction:

The passages are easy to use and cover 133 sight words (Dolch Pre-Primer, Primer, and First Grade).  Each passage targets 4 sight words at a time.  Students simply:
1) Go on a “hunt” for the 4 targeted sight words with a crayon or highlighter.
2) Build fluency by reading the passage three times.  Students color a happy face at the end of each passage after the repeated reading.
3) Illustrate the text to demonstrate comprehension of the passage.
When used once daily, this is over SIX weeks of reading intervention for your kiddos.  It is great for a small group, an RTI setting, or an after-school or tutoring program.  It could also be used as a simple reading homework program for all students.  The pack was designed for first grade, but if you teach second and third graders who have still not mastered reading at least 80 words per minute, this pack would be ideal for them as well.  Each passage contains the number of words at the bottom of the page, should the teacher want to use these passages for assessment or tracking the fluency progress of each student. Flashcards in both a “print” font and a Times New Roman font are provided.  The passages are also copied with the Times New Roman font so that you can mix and match to get your students “used” to and practicing the words in this type of font.

  1. I love this idea…..it is so inventive and creative. Would you consider creating the next levels and continuing up the sight word ladder? Thanks again for your products.

    1. Louise,

I should have the second and third grade words added to the packet soon. When I add them, anyone who has already purchased the set will be able to re-download the revised edition for free. :). Thank you for your feedback! 🙂

  2. This is brillant!! Have you tried this out with your students? I will purchase on Monday and let you know how my students improve after a few weeks. I plan on using it in class then send home the different font passage for homework.

    Thank you,

  3. Kelly,

Yes! 🙂 I used this with my low group. The repeated readings of the sight words and identifying the words first has helped them! 🙂 I like the idea of using it as homework and can't wait to hear how the homework goes!

  4. I have some kiddos who are really struggling in the word i.d. area. We keep working and WORKING but they are not growing as quickly as I would like. I'm super excited to try this out with them. I'm hoping it will help with their spelling too! 🙂 Thanks for the great resource!

  5. Just wanted to tell you that I adore this product. I used it with three of my struggling groups last week and it was perfect! By the end of the week, many of my kiddos were reading more fluently and zipping by words that they had previously gotten stuck on! Thank you so much!!!

  6. Hi Christina,
I too, feel that teaching is a calling even after 30 years. I have been tutoring for the past seven years since I retired. I have just purchased your Sight Word Fluency Passages but when I try to print it out, part of the left side of the page is missing. Any suggestions? Thank you!

    1. Hi Joan, this sounds like an Adobe issue. Make sure your Adobe software is up to date. You can download a free update on their site. This will fix anything you are seeing as far as text being missing. I just checked the file and all is fine on it. Let me know if you need help! 🙂
