National Poetry Month, Freebie, & Sale!

I left my classroom Friday in both pain and happiness.

Pain – because I could barely open my right eye due to what I thought was allergies.  I went straight to the eye doctor and found out I had scratched my cornea right across the center.  How in the world did I do that?!  Anyways, it is a pretty painful experience and thanks to the world of antibiotic drops I can at least open my eye again.  I’m also lucky because I get to wear my really cool, fashionable eyeglasses that are about 4 years old for the next week.

Happiness – because my kiddos were SO sweet!.  They could tell my eye was hurting me (It kept tearing up so much I literally looked like I was crying all day as I taught.).  When they asked if they could go outside for Friday recess, I told them we couldn’t because the sun was hurting my eye too much.  One little boy said “That’s okay, Miss DeCarbo. The important thing is that you get better!”  Awwwww.  That was all it took for my kids to happily get out the indoor recess games.  ðŸ™‚  The whole situation gave me an idea for a new project that I’ll be working on this week dealing with friendship – stay tuned! It’s looking adorable and I can’t wait to share it with you!

Did you know April is National Poetry Month?  It was started in 1996 to celebrate the art of poetry and poets!  This Thursday, April 26th is Poem in your Pocket Day.  All around the U.S., people will carry a poem in their pocket and share that poem with others throughout the day.

Let’s take part by inviting our students to join in on the fun!  Set aside a special time this Thursday to celebrate poetry with your students.  This Thursday, my students will be reading poetry for fluency practice, writing their own poems, and sharing those poems with their classmates. Below are some of my favorite poetry websites for kids that you will want to check out with your students! 🙂

I hope that your drops continue to work and your eye heals quickly! I just upgraded my glasses myself from a pair that I had since my junior year of college! I won't admit how long ago that was. 🙂
I am hosting a second grade math giveaway and I'd love to have to stop by and check it out!

  2. I love the freebie! My kids worked on list poems, riddles poems, and cinquains this month. I was looking for another type to do this week and I think I've found it! 🙂
