Monday Made It – Tiki Door Topper!
I’m linking up with Tara at 4th Grade Frolics for my first Monday Made It post! Today I’m sharing with you how I created my tiki door topper for my tropical classroom theme. I’m excited for the kids to see it in a couple of weeks!
This will only work if your classroom door is not flush against the walls to each side of it. You will need to measure the distance between each wall outside of your door in order to figure out how much material you will need. 🙂
You will need:
2 shower rods (purchase rods that long enough to stretch across the distance between the walls.)
1 (or 2) grass table skirts
hot glue gun and glue
4 large flat washers
4 1″ EMT clamps
1 foam board (measured and cut to fit in between the two walls outside of your door.)
First we started by fitting the shower rods firmly to the walls – the back shower rod is angled up and the front shower rod is further down the wall and all the way forward. (You want to create an angle when the foam board is placed on the rods to give it the appearance of a hut.)
Next, cut the table skirt (ours was really long) so that you will have 2 “layers” of grass to glue onto the foam piece. Hot glue the first layer slightly below the top. Glue the second layer at the very top of the foam piece to make it appear thicker.
Next we wedged the board against the walls and shower rods and attached the clamps to the foam board and the rod using the large washers. This makes everything very secure. The picture on the right is what the hut looks like from underneath so you can see the 4 clamps.
That’s it! 🙂 Here’s our finished product:
This could be used for other themes, too. Replace the grass skirt with a different material that matches your theme (leaves for a jungle theme, fabric for a circus tent, etc.).
