This is not an exaggeration by any means. They truly ask me when they can get their hands on another passage. Think about that…these are struggling readers who are begging for me to give them a new reading passage to devour. It just doesn’t get any better than that!
The intervention is easy to implement and yet SUPER effective.
Each passage targets 4 sight words. Students identify the sight words within the passage before they read to set them up for success and provide additional practice in finding the words within the context of a text instead of only on flashcards. They color the sight words within the passage.
Now it’s time to get our fluency on! Students read each passage three times. They color a happy face each time they read. Students feel SUCCESSFUL because they have already identified and practiced the sight words within the passage.
Finally, they illustrate the passage to show comprehension. I’ve had teachers ask me why I didn’t include a picture to go with each passage. I did this on purpose! I want my students to always APPLY their reading skills. By having students illustrate the passage themselves, we are strategically activating their comprehension abilities and skills. Plus, getting to illustrate the story on their own is FUN! 🙂
