Favorite Picture Books Linky Party!

Photobucket
Lindsey, over at The Teacher Wife, is hosting a Favorite Picture Books Linky Party.  This was a hard one – I have so many picture books that I love sharing with my students.  Here are my Top 5 Picks and why I love them!  ðŸ™‚
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell
This is a *must* for the beginning of the year.  I love the lesson it teaches on being kind and anti-bullying.  It was read to my class during my first year of teaching by my principal at the time, and I fell in love with this adorable character!
Pancakes for Breakfast By Tomie DePaola
This is an oldie but a goodie! I love to use this picture book to begin my Daily 5 stamina building, when we talk about “Reading the Pictures.” This wordless book is perfect for explaining and demonstrating to students how to read pictures when they Read to Self.
Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch
My kids just love this book every year!  It teaches a great lesson about individuality and self-confidence.  My students love to chant along with me in this book and it is a great choice to teach a fluency mini-lesson.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
I love to use this book during my owl unit to teach descriptive writing to my students.  The imagery and language in this book is beautiful.  My kids really respond to the quietness the book portrays and walk away with a great understanding of “telling more” in their writing.
Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse By Kevin Henkes
This is a pretty popular and common favorite, but I can’t help it! I love Lilly’s character and how my kiddos can relate to her so much, especially during back to school time.  I always kick off the school year with a Kevin Henkes unit and this is a great book to teach classroom rules.
